Birdwatching in La Janda
Late spring and summer rambles through the farmland and scrub in the vicinity of the hotel should delight birders – stone curlew, red-necked nightjar, little bustard, Montagu’s harrier and hoopoe all breed here, whilst spectacular griffon vultures are ever-present overhead.
Thanks to its location under the migration route across the nearby Straits of Gibraltar, there is year-round interest, with large numbers of kites, eagles and other raptors passing through. The nearby La Janda wetland attracts purple gallinule, spoonbill and glossy ibis, but perhaps the biggest spectacle of all is hundreds of wintering cranes.

Our good friends, a very hospitable Spanish family have developed their well known Cortjo and Restaurant to include first class accommodation, and since the "Cortijo Los Monteros" is on the bird migration route to Africa near the southern tip of Spain, it is an ideal base for birdwatchers. Walkers will love the nearby "Ruta Verde", a long-distance trail that follows ancient droveways through farmland and the forested mountains of the Alcornocales Natural Park.
